Barbara Bush Visits Vanderlyn 1988

We've known all along that Vanderlyn is a special place.  Word made it to D.C. and Mrs. George Bush had to see for herself. Rumor is that DeKalb hauled away 21 learning cottages from Vanderlyn, temporarily.  The portable trailers were parked at Chesnut Elementary as a warning not to invite Kitty Dukakis.  On her visit Barbara casually dropped $3,500 in a gift-wrap and book-fair spending splurge, helping Vandy PTA crack the $500,000 mark in savings. Later this year Bush crushed Dukakis and became president.  In her memoirs Mrs. Bush mentioned how impressed she was with the Vanderlyn PTA moms and made note of their car pool lane efficiency.
